Abstract

We studied the periodicity of formation of growth marks in the bones of the tropical frog Rana cyanophlyctis. Frogs were maintained in the laboratory for one year under natural temperature and day length. Toe clippings were made at the beginning and at the termination of the experiment. Skeletochronological comparison of initially clipped toes with those clipped at the termination of the experiment revealed that in all the frogs an additional growth mark or line of arrested growth (LAG) appeared in the phalangeal histology, suggesting that the formation of growth marks is annual in this tropical frog.
